I’m here to talk about procrastination.
It is the one downfall that I feel everyone can relate to. You have a goal that you know you need to get done, but somehow, time goes by and it’s too late to do it. That was me all through school. Well that’s me now too…
But I’m working on it.
What does the Bible say about procrastination?
Matthew 5:23-24
So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift.
Jesus is quite clear in this verse that you should immediately go and be reconciled, not waiting until tomorrow. He says “leave your gift there before the alter and go.” So it is also important to prioritize, and you need to do what is of higher priority first. (In this case the relationship with the brother is higher priority than the offering.)
In your life, you have a set of priorities. And it is important to live according to them. God is a God of order and since we have been made in his image, we are called to be orderly.
The bottom line is we know we shouldn’t procrastinate, but how to not do it?
Psalm 119:60
I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.
David, one of the great men of faith, writes that he hastens to keep God’s commandments. It’s almost implied that David knew himself so well that he jumped straight to it before he had a chance to procrastinate. We could take a clue from this man of God. If you know you have a tendency to keep putting something off, then hasten to get it done.
Action defeats procrastination. And immediate action defeats procrastination immediately.
This post was such a struggle to write, because I was having such a tough morning emotionally. I didn’t feel like I had anything good to offer, and I saw everything else that needed to get done, but I just sat down and wrote.
I am very glad I’m done with it, but I sure didn’t feel like I could do it at first. And we all have those days. Just remember,
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!”
So ignore your feelings and DO.
